We are starting to settle in a little bit. We have a car, albeit a rental and we have a home, albeit for the next 2 weeks.
Top on the agenda currently is to find a semi-permanent place to live. Closely aligned to finding a home is finding a school for the kids to go to. The best schools are- wait for it- in the most expensive neighbourhoods. Okay, so that's not surprising. What is surprising is just how expensive these places are, whether for rent or purchase. I don't have culture shock but rather sticker shock. We can get a decent place near a decent school but it would probably take me about an hour each way to get to work via train. That makes for a long day and sort of defeats part of the purpose for moving here. We may just have to plug our noses, swallow hard and live like most other people: beyond our means.
Tomorrow, we are going to a couple of schools. My boss was kind enough to let me be truant whenever necessary. His name is Robert and he's British, but don't hold that against him. Thus far he's been very supportive and understanding of my very slight suicidal urges. As long as it's not homicidal he's fine with it. Anyways, regarding the schools, we're really hoping that tomorrow is the day when everything starts to fall in place and we can pick a school and then pick a neighbourhood in which to live.
On the bright side, today is sunny and 25 in Perth. The locals say it's been a very cool spring here. Usually it's in the high 20's, low 30's by this time. It's like a nice summer day in Calgary here right now. Although, I'm told that before long it'll be like a nice summer day on the surface of the Sun.
We were hoping to get the boys into hockey here. However, it looks like there is exactly one rink in the city. So, there's a chance they'll play hockey but not a huge one. We'll have to bite the proverbial bullet and do what I swore I would never do: learn the rules of cricket. Tally-ho!
