Take me home

Yesterday we moved from our first temporary apartment to our second temporary apartment. The first one was very small but the new one is much bigger. However, both are located in the outskirts of downtown- called the CBD (central business district). It is a little like kensington and inglewood but it has a lot of youth hostels and bars. While the new place is bigger it's also much noisier. First we weren't getting any sleep because of the jet lag and now we're not sleeping because of the noise. But enough complaining about the noise.

Now I'll move on to complaining about the Internet. We had no wifi connection in the first place so we went to the public library two blocks away. In the new place there is wifi but the signal is very weak so not only is the connection slow but it cuts in and out at the most inopportune times. We can't connect our laptop to the Internet at all for some reason so we're doing everything on the iPad.

Complaint #3: our air freight still hasn't arrived. This wouldn't be a big deal except that all of my work clothing is on the air freight. I start work on friday (tomorrow). To make matters worse our "relocation consultant" has no idea when our airfreight will arrive but she does know that our sea freight eta is dec.11. So, we already bought a couple of shirts and pants and today we're buying shoes. Good thing we didn't pack our underwear in the airfreight.

Yesterday we managed to get out of the drunken backpackers district and look at some rental properties with our relocation specialist. Rentals are extremely expensive and you don't get much for your money. For only $800/week you can get a 1500 sq ft home with 4 bedrooms. For $1000/week you can get a place relatively close to the ocean or the CBD (but not both). The highlight of the day is that we saw a kangaroo hopping down a residential street. Despite the stereotype there aren't Roos all over the place and our guide was shocked to see it. It's the equivalent of seeing a deer walking through your neighborhood in Calgary. Otherwise, the only wildlife we've encountered are pidgeons, magpies (@ 5am) and the local drunkards.

So, after several days of high anxiety we've decided to say f*@$ it! We're going to the beach today. Based on the last couple of days don't be surprised if the next blog is entitled "why is this enormous fish biting me?"
